Clinical Neuropsychology

Clinical neuropsychology is a sub-specialty of clinical psychology that focuses on the diagnostic assessment and treatment of patients with brain injury or neurocognitive deficits. Generally clinical neuropsychologists are often involved in conducting neuropsychological assessment to assess a person's cognitive skills, usually after some sort of brain injury or neurological impairment. This may be for the purposes of planning treatments, to determine someone's neurocognitive functioning or mental capacity or to detect changes over time.

Special attention is putted on dysfunctions in emotional behavior for the degenerative syndromes (Alzheimer’s disease; Parkinson syndrome); Addiction; Dysexecutive syndrome.

Emotion subtopic

Good emotional skills contribute to a large extent to social competence overall. Deficits in functional systems related to emotion and affectivity may give rise to inter-action and life autonomy disorders. Authors have supposed an involvment in pathologies like autistic syndrome.

Motion subtopic

Motion can be voluntary or automatic. The mental processes of movement and action are composed by several distributed adaptive modules whose dysfunctions (i.e. due to brain lesions) have different consequences. Apraxias for example derive from dysfunctions in pianification and programming of actions.

Attention subtopic

Attention is one of the main functions of mind. Many authors have tried to find a theoretical model of it. Damage to the attentional system neuroanatomical correlates may cause different disorders like emispatial neglect.

Memory subtopic

Clinical neuropsychology aims to investigate the role of the dysfunctional mechanisms different disorders. One of the most thoroughly examined issue is memory process, whose disregulation constitutes the core of different syndromes, for example, PTSD. PTSD concerns primary with of traumatic and non traumatic events episodic memory whose deficits are associated with the disfunctional activation of cerebral regions as Prefrontal Cortex (PFC).
